Subscale

Subscale is YJSP’s proof-of-concept liquid-fueled rocket and serves as the first true test of YJ-1R. Our objective is to complete MECO and successfully recover the vehicle. A successful launch of Subscale will prove that we have the necessary concepts and structures to build a much larger rocket capable of reaching the Karman line.

Flight Dynamics

Flight Dynamics handles all tasks requiring complex aerodynamic simulations for YJSP. For Subscale, this involves three main things: live state estimation for the rocket (which way is the rocket pointing), Monte Carlo trajectory simulations (where will we land), and the recovery system (parachute deployment).

 
 

Structures

The YJSP Structures team is responsible for designing and fabricating all of the structural components of the vehicle, which includes the airframe, and the mounting interfaces for every other system on the vehicle.

Avionics

The Avionics system is the electrical system for Subscale, and is one of the most complex electrical systems created by a college team. It consists of 5 custom-designed PCBs all running a custom software stack that work in perfect coordination to accomplish the major functions of a liquid-propellant rocket: engine control, engine data acquisition, state estimation, and power distribution.

 
 

Propulsion

The Propulsion team designs, machines, and tests our liquid-fuel rocket engine as well as all the supporting fluids systems. Liquid-propellant rocket engines are incredibly complex fluids systems requiring extremely careful engineering, and our Propulsion team puts in incredible amounts of work designing not only our engine, but also the feedsystem that carries propellants from the tanks to the engine. This team is also the only college team in the country that designs and manufactures its own custom-designed valves.
